Definition: Sebaceous cysts are common noncancerous cysts of the skin. Cysts are abnormalities in the body that may contain liquid or semiliquid material. Sebaceous cysts are mostly found on the face, neck, or torso. They grow slowly and aren’t life-threatening, but they may become uncomfortable if they go unchecked.
I now have experienced the development and need to deal with a sebaceous cyst that became infected and quite uncomfortable. About a year ago during a routine examination, the cyst was identified. It showed up as a small lump under the skin on my belly. I was a bit concerned about this - was it something cancerous? My doctor assured me that it was benign and that I should not worry about it unless it were to get infected.
Well, about two weeks ago that indeed happened. The area around the cyst started getting red and sore. At first I didn't think too much about it until it became clear that the cyst was infected and was getting worse by the day. When I look at it now, it almost looks like the start of a Xenomorph / alien chestburster birth!
Thankfully this was not the case but as of late last week, the pain and discomfort that the cyst was causing me increased significantly and it also started to emit a rather noxious smell - almost like my skin was rotting from the inside out - yuck! I made the mistake of going to a walk-in clinic during the evening hours and was "treated" by a "doctor" that barely looked at the cyst and then prescribed more antibiotics. This was a terrible experience. I won't mention the name of the doctor nor the name of the clinic but I will say that everyone should be careful before they go to a walk-in. It might actually be better to simply go to a hospital emergency. At least there you will be taken seriously and will get treated even though you may need to wait for a long time. The wait is worth it.
On the weekend I went to the Regina General Hospital emergency and had them take another look at the cyst. The nurses and doctors there agreed that the cyst was in bad condition and needed to be treated with antibiotics and should probably be drained, after which I would need to go to a plastic surgeon to have all of the remaining cyst material removed to prevent a recurrence. I opted to have them cut open the cyst and squeeze out the sebaceous material and the puss that had developed with the infection. Although the experience was a bit painful, I made the right decision. It was incredible how much sebaceous material, puss, and blood came out of the infected area. Not quite the same as a chestburster but still messy...
Thanks to all of the nurses and doctors at the emergency of the Regina General Hospital. You were all a pleasure to deal with and were extremely helpful.
Now I just need to get in with a plastic surgeon and get this thing cleaned and sown up for good. Hopefully it will not return.
