Japan Trip 2023: Miraikan - National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation

Surprise! Another hot day in Tokyo. This week is so different from last week when the temperature ranged between 24C and 30C. Now it is even more humid and the temperatures are consistently around 32C with a humidex of close to 39C. Ugh... This is a bit much for me. As someone who has lived my entire life in the relatively dry environment of Saskatchewan, I struggle mightily with the sticky, muggy feeling of high humidity. I knew that Japan is like this in the summer but I forgot how easily I overheat. I was reminded of that today.

We decided to take the kids down to Odaiba to the Miraikan - the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. This is basically a mega science centre like many Canadian cities have. There are lots of in-depth exhibits and interactive displays covering areas from physics, biology, chemistry, life sciences, space science, etc. There's actually too much here to take in on a given afternoon. It was especially tough today given that there were a ton of school field trips arriving. So many students running around!

Frankly, it was exhausting trying to take in all of the various displays and knowledge showcased at the Miraikan. Doing this place justice would require several days of focused concentration. I was struggling the entire time that we were here. The heat and humidity were definitely getting to me. My body was sweaty and overheating something terrible. Making things worse, I had a terrible sleep last night for some reason. I found some relief under a couple of air conditioning outlets that were pumping lots of nice cool air onto me. Yet, I didn't really recover.

The family wanted to go shopping once again and I, once again, didn't want to go shopping! So, I made my way back to the apartment. This time I sweated my way back, took a shower and went to sleep for several hours. I felt a lot better when I woke up in the evening. Tough day in Tokyo.
