The winter of 2022/23 was an unusually long one here in Saskatchewan. It just seemed to take forever for spring to finally settle in for good. Two weeks ago I thought that spring had finally sprung when we had a warm snap. One day it got as warm as 17C and the huge amount of snow that had accumulated throughout the winter started its quick disappearance. Then last week a blizzard or "Colorado low" as they now call these things arrived and dashed all hopes of an end to winter. It almost seemed like just as much snow fell last Thursday and Friday than came down all winter.
No more though (or so I hope - it can still snow here in May and June!). Today the high was 18C with lots of sunshine. It was definitely time to break out the BBQ for the first grilling of 2023. Thank goodness!
Yeah, I still use a Weber charcoal "kettle" barbecue. I've been using charcoal for the past twenty-three years. I got back into it in the early 2000s after a couple of decades of using gas barbecues. I think that I was feeling some nostalgia at the time for the type of barbecuing my family did when I was a little kid - before gas barbecues became popular and mainstream. I was pleasantly surprised when moving back to charcoal - the flavours are much different than on a gas barbecue. While I have gone back to gas from time to time, I still make a point of using charcoal as much as possible.
I'm so happy to have the opportunity to get back to barbecuing today. I've been running out of meal ideas and the BBQ opens up a whole new realm of possibilities that I can tap into. My family was quite happy this evening too for a change in meals. We had beef tenderloins (man are those ever expensive right now!), mild Italian sausage, baked potatoes with sour cream and bacon bits, and a Caesar salad. My kids were so happy that they actually made me 'thank you' card!
It was a great evening of barbecuing. Thank you spring...
