I'm sad to report that our little bonsai tree project has come to an inglorious end. The one seedling that we had managed to keep alive, keeled over and died recently. We're not sure what happened to it given that it seemed to be doing so well. Out of the three seedlings that came up, this was the first and strongest of the bunch.
Late last week this seedling started to droop. Even though we consistently watered it, the little tree just couldn't seem to maintain itself. At first we thought that perhaps it had gotten too much water but this wasn't the case. For whatever reason - perhaps it just turned out to be too weak - this promising seedling just couldn't make it.
So, our project turned out to be an overall failure. But, we tried our best. Unfortunately, it just wasn't meant to be. We still have some seeds left over from our original planting. Will we give it another go at some point? Perhaps. Maybe at some point in the summer it will be time to try this again. Perhaps during the hot summer months when the days are long and the sunshine strong, we might have some better luck keeping one of these seedlings alive and we can then grow it into a beautiful bonsai tree.
Or, maybe we've had enough! We'll play it by ear...
