Bonsai Project: Update 3 - And Then There Were Two?

Our little bonsai tree project continues. As I wrote about back in late December, my family and I undertook a project to grow some bonsai trees from a kit that my wife bought me several years ago. The seeds were a bit old and stale so the results haven't turned out as well as we had hoped as I detailed earlier in February. At that time, three Jacaranda Mimosifolia seedlings had sprouted while none of the other three varieties had germinated. While disappointed that only one variety of tree has come to life, we were quite excited that we had three Jacaranda Mimosifolia seedlings.

Since I last wrote about the project back on February 4th, there have been some disappointments. The third seedling to come up has died. It didn't seem to be able to hive off the shell of its seed and it has simply dried up. The second seedling was doing well until its stem appeared to weaken at the soil line and it folded in half. While I tried to put more soil around the base of this seedling, this didn't seem to help as much as I hoped it would. As can be seen in the picture below, this seedling is still hanging on and some of its primary leaves are emerging. But, I'm not 100% sure that it is going to survive.

The first seedling seems to be thriving. Its secondary leaves are developing nicely and it looks like it will survive. As February progresses and the days get longer, this seedling will be getting a lot more sun. Hopefully this will allow it to continue on a growth spurt and I will be able to transplant it to a proper pot in the next month or so. We'll then be able to start "training" and shaping the tree into something that will hopefully be very beautiful and long-lived.

We continue to hope that the second seedling will catch on and get back to growing. Until the next update...
