COVID-19: I Got It...

It was only a matter of time... I was hoping though that I would be able to escape the pandemic and not ever come down with COVID-19. My luck ran out on Friday, June 3rd when Omicron came knocking.

I started to get a sore throat on Friday evening. This could have just been the start of a common cold but I knew that this was likely not the case. My wife and one of my daughters had gone down with COVID-19 about a week earlier. While I had been doing my best to avoid contact over the week, it was impossible to not be exposed to the virus.

I had taken my kids to the school playground to hang out with their friends. While I sat on a park bench and read a book, it became clear to me that I was feeling more and more ill. After around 90 minutes, I went to the kids and told them that it was getting late, I wasn't feeling good, and that it was time to go home. They weren't enthusiastic about this at all - they wanted to continue hanging out with their friends. I finally put my foot down and told them that we had to go home.

When I got back to the house I immediately went to bed. I think that I slept for a couple of hours. Around 11:30pm I decided to get out the COVID-19 rapid test kit to see if I was indeed positive. I had been testing all week and every result was negative. Had my luck now ran out? Indeed it had...

Today is now day five of this COVID infection. Even though I am fully vaccinated and this is no doubt the Omicron variant (which is apparently less severe), this has been very much like a severe cold. I have felt absolutely rotten since Friday night and I'm now just starting to see a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel. I've experienced severe headaches, muscle and joint aches, congestion, runny nose, sinus pain, cough, and fatigue. This is definitely one of the worst colds I have had in my life. Interestingly, my other kid came down with COVID-19 on Saturday. But she, along with my other kid and my wife didn't get as sick as I have. I'm the weak one in this house!

I've definitely had better weekends than the one that just passed. I've also missed three days of work now that I'll never get back. Once this is through and I'm feeling better, I'll definitely have a lot of catching up to do. Even at home, I've fallen behind on a ton of yard work (I haven't been outside the house since Friday so I dread to find out what my lawn and other parts of the yard actually look like right now!). I just want this over with and hopefully I'll be immune to it (or largely immune to it going forward). Ugh...

This got me thinking a bit about the pandemic and whether or not it has simply become endemic now. What is the situation. I came across the following podcast episode from the BBC radio series called The Enquiry. Interesting listen.
