The other day, my daughter asked me to grab a piece of canvas for her. She said she wanted to do some oil painting. I got the canvas for her and helped set up the painting area. I had no idea what she had in mind. I figured that she would simply do some experimentation and probably come up with something abstract.
Later in the afternoon, she came to me and said she was done. I was pleasantly surprised by what she had painted: a single large sunflower against a blue sky. I was impressed by the composition and how she pulled off this image. She is still quite young and doesn't have any formal training in painting, especially oil painting.
I haven't always been too keen to encourage her interest in visual art (in the long run isn't this the path straight into the poor house?!). She is starting to develop some nice skills though with respect to painting and drawing. She can do things at her age that I was not able to do; I wouldn't have known where to start. I'm not going to discourage her creativity. I hope that she continues to develop these skills and can do something creative with them in the future.
I was also intrigued by the subject that she chose - a sunflower. I'm assuming that she was thinking about the war in Ukraine. I don't know for sure but I think this is the case. She is a very soft-spoken person and she didn't really express to me that clearly why she decided to paint this. Regardless, I am impressed by the abilities that she's developing and the thoughtfulness that she put into this piece of art.
