I've continued on my journey learning to play the bass guitar. I've been at it now for around two and a half years. I think that this is definitely the longest that I've ever stuck with learning a musical instrument. I tried organ as a kid and that lasted about two years until I realized that it was something that I didn't really enjoy. I still regret to this day that my Mom and Dad shelled out some pretty big cash back in 1985 to purchase an organ. Such a waste of money. I also tried to learn guitar but the finger pain and the overall technique required of the instrument was just not for me.
For some reason though, bass is something that I've been willing to stick with, practicing on almost a daily basis. SBL has proven to be a good learning tool - at least so far. I'm at an age where I don't really want to work with a teacher. I'm more of a self-learner at this point. I'd prefer to try and figure things out on my own with good video lessons and some occasional online feedback. At some point perhaps I'll want to get a face-to-face teacher but for right now, I'm having fun just slowly making my way through the SBL Players Path program.
This time, I completed three songs on Level 3: Rag and Bone (kind of a Police-esque, reggae number), Wistful (a slow "wistful" tune that reminds me of mid-70's Rod Stewart), and Groove Station (this one just moves like late-70's funk).
I enjoyed learning all of these songs. None of them were easy at first but I was able to more or less wrap my fingers around them. This is one of the greatest things that I've learned from playing the bass guitar: it takes time and you can't be an expert at anything right off the bat. I've known this forever but I've never overcome this need to be good at things right away - until now. I'm grateful to finally learn this for real and incorporate it into how I do things.
