I have continued to undertake my journey learning the bass guitar. This is probably the longest (or close to the longest) period of time that I have stuck with a musical instrument. I have been using Scott's Bass Lessons (SBL) for instruction since the spring of this year and I have found that the Players Path system is a rather good way of learning the instrument.
After completing Level 1 of Players Path, I immediately moved on to Level 2. I selected the three songs that I wanted to learn and began with one called "Boss the Bossa". To my surprise, this tune was much harder to wrap my head around than any of the ones I covered in Level 1. Boss the Bossa is, as the name suggests, a bossa nova tune. Lots of syncopated rhythm and notes in strange places. I love this type of music but it took my a long time to get the hang of it.
It actually took me the entire summer of 2021 to finally get to the point where I could play the song through without mistakes. It was frustrating - so frustrating that I was seriously considering throwing in the towel. I started having negative thoughts such as:
- I'm too old to be learning a musical instrument.
- I don't have enough time to be learning this.
- I'm not getting the hang of this - perhaps I'm not good at learning music.
- Am I wasting my time doing this?
- Maybe I should try another instrument or find some other hobby that I am more suited to.
I managed to somehow work through this negative thinking and I continued to methodically work through the sheet music for the song bit by bit, day by day. This did ultimately work - I was able to recently play the song the entire way through, record it and submit to SBL for feedback. It was painful at times to achieve this but it was very satisfying to finally pull it off.
The lesson for me is something that I wished I had learned first-hand a long time ago: you can't be an expert immediately on anything. Some things will be harder than others but, with enough time, you can get the hang of it. This hasn't been my approach to most things in life. I'm usually looking for things that I have "talent" in and can learn fairly quickly. I've been operating this way for so long that it's tough to change even with this recent experience. But I am hoping that I can take some small steps to being more patient with myself when learning new things. Perseverance is unquestionably important.
