Over the past year I have been attempting to learn to play the bass guitar. I've always loved this instrument -- the low-end sound and the role that it plays in an ensemble. It can also sound great as a solo instrument. Since taking the plunge and buying a cheap bass kit in the fall of 2019, I have been through a few different instruments. I've also done a lot of research online with respect to both lessons and gear. I've definitely learned a lot (but there is so much more to learn!).
Through my research, I've come across videos of many great bass players from all kinds of backgrounds. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have spent a lot of time at Lee Sklar's YouTube channel listening to his stories and checking out his playing technique. I've also discovered a number of younger players including a girl from Poland named Kinga Glyk. Kinga has quickly become one of my bass guitar heroes.
I came across some of her videos on YouTube where she demonstrates her skills as a soloist. But, I truly became a fan when I saw the concert video of her performance with her trio at the 2017 Leverkusener Jazztage in Germany. The funky opening track caught my attention with Kinga just absolutely digging in on her Fender Jazz Bass. The second track just had me enchanted though as her great keyboard player put forth some very cool textures and the lighting on the stage created a heavenly atmosphere. Then Kinga kicked in with her Greco bass (a Japanese copy of a Gibson SG bass) and its heavy, earthy tone. Kinga has stated that both Jaco Pastorius and Marcus Miller are influences and it shows in much of her playing. Just spectacular!
I wish that I would have discovered this concert earlier than this year. It would have been nice to have known about Kinga and her talent back in 2017. I have purchased both of her studio album releases and they are great.
I can only dream that there was more of a jazz music scene like this where I live. It would be great to see artists like Kinga Glyk in person. For now though, I will rely on YouTube and my trusty old stereo system.
