Ever since I was a kid I have been obsessed with guitars for some reason. I'm not sure why. I think that it has something to do with the kind of music that my older brother listened to - lots of 70's rock. The guitar - in particular the electric guitar - just seemed so cool to me.
When I was in my "tween" years, I made up my mind - I wanted to take guitar lessons. I was able to convince my parents that this is something that I would like to do. They made an appointment with a local music school and a representative dropped by the house. The representative, unbeknownst to us, had an agenda of her own - to convince me that guitar was not a great instrument for someone my age to learn. Her view was that the electronic organ was a much better choice. I wasn't too excited about this. The electric organ? Really?!
Ultimately, I succumbed to the rep's sales pitch and decided to start studying organ. It was kind of fun at first but my heart just wasn't into it. I didn't have the heart / courage though to say to my parents that I really didn't want to continue - that I should be trying out the guitar just to make sure that I haven't made a mistake. So, they bought an expensive organ and I continued to play / take lessons for a couple of unenthusiastic years. It didn't last though and I ultimately quit.
Fast forward thirty-four years. I still retained this desire to own and play the guitar. Recently I started learning to play the bass. This has been a lot of fun. But, I also wanted to try my hand at guitar. So, I did a ton of research and decided to buy an acoustic/electric guitar made by the same company that made my bass - Kona Guitars. The following is a video of the unboxing of the Kona K2 that arrived the other day.
Kona is more or less an "entry-level" brand of guitars. The company was started back in 2000 and is based in Fort Worth, Texas. The guitars are manufactured in China. Although I looked at lots of other makes - Yamaha, Fender/Squire, Gibson/Epiphone, Ibanez, - I ultimately decided to go with the same manufacturer as my bass. I wanted something unique that not too many people where I live will have.
I'm planning on taking some adult group lessons in the new year and am really looking forward to it. Hopefully my fingers won't be too sore for too long.
