2019 Canadian Dragon Boat Championships: Regina

Normally, Regina's dragon boat festival is held during Labour Day in early September. This year though, the city is hosting the Canadian national championships.  Dragon boat teams from across the country have come to Regina to show their stuff.  I decided to go down to Wascana Park this morning to check out the action.

There was a lot of activity and the event seemed much more formal and organized than the typical dragon boat races I've attended in the past.  Given that there were teams from across Canada, this was definitely a different event.  Many of the teams were doing calisthenics and were being mentally prepared by coaches.  Clearly, this was serious business!

I was able to catch one race.  Unfortunately, the action was taking place on the other side of Wascana Lake from where I was standing at the Wascana Marina.  From what I could see though, the boats were really moving - the ones in the lead definitely contained strong and polished rowers.  All the way from across the other side of the lake I could hear the beat of the drums, urging the competitors to not only row in unison but to also keep the pace.

The rowers had a great day to compete - not too hot (23C) and not too windy (unusual for Regina).  It was great to get out in the fresh air and see the high level of competition at this weekend's event.  To finish things off, I went to IHADay Bubble Tea on Broad Street for a mango milk tea - nice...
