The Leader Post recently reported that a severe drought has hit southern Saskatchewan. This has been extremely noticeable here in Regina. There has been a lack of rain. I can't remember the last time we received any rain. Lately, there has been a great deal of cloud cover over the city but not a drop of rain. It is quite incredible - days on end of cloud and, at times, thunderstorms. Yet, no rain.
Trees and lawns throughout the city are stressed. I've noticed a large number of city trees that have died and been cut down. This leaves such a ugly hole in the landscape wherever it has happened. I do hope that the city will replace these trees. Hopefully not until there is some sign of this drought coming to an end.
The constant cloud and no rain reminds me of stories that my grandparents used to tell us of the "dirty thirties" and the Great Depression. They were farmers and had to endure months on end of clouds and no rain. It looks as though that cycle is playing itself out once again on the Canadian prairies. We need rain.
At least these plants have come up and are showing their beauty. Not so sure about the shrubs behind them though...
