I’m an average guy from the Canadian prairies. I’ve been on the planet for nearly five decades now. I’m a father, a husband, a son, a brother, and an uncle. A writer, an avid reader, a movie lover, a music lover, an intellectual, an Asiaphile, and a lifelong learner. I’ve had and am having an interesting life - of which some experiences I hope to share through this blog.
Over the past thirty-two years I have had the good fortune of first being exposed to and then immersed in the cultures of Vietnam, China, and Japan. My high school had the largest ESL program in my city in the late 1980’s. As a result, there were many children of the Vietnamese “Boat People” at my school and some of them became my friends - teaching me about the food, languages, and cultures of Vietnam and China. I learned how to use chopsticks. I learned new words. And, most importantly, I learned to appreciate and love cultures dramatically different from my own.
Now at mid-life, I am married to a Japanese woman, have two wonderful children, am learning the Japanese language, and get to travel to Japan on a regular basis. Japan has become my second home. Although I will never completely fit in there, I love visiting Japan. It is such a clean, organized, and polite country. Almost paradise for an introvert like myself!
Life can be hard. While I’ve never been an overtly spiritual person I have come to realize the importance of some sort of spirituality to one’s overall well being. To achieve a greater degree of health and reduce the level of stress in my life, I have started to play the bass guitar. Although I tried playing music in my youth (I attempted to play the organ), I didn't enjoy it and quit. Now all these years later I am back to trying to learn music but on an instrument that I love and by playing music that I love.
So please take a read and be kind. I hope that you get some value out of what I’m sharing.

私はカナダのプレ-リ-大草原に住む、ごく一般的な人間です。この世に生まれて４０年以上になります。私は父であり、夫であり、息子であり、弟であり、叔父でもあります。読書と映画鑑賞が好きで、７０年から９０年代のロック音楽通です。今までの人生でのたくさんの経験をこのブログを通して、みなさんとシェアしたいと考えております。
幸運にも私は、過去３２年以上にわたって、ベトナム文化、中国文化、日本文化に触れることができました。１９８０年代後半、私が通っていた高校では、市で最も大きなESLプログラムがあったので、移民の子供たちがたくさんいました。何人かとは友達になり、彼らからベトナムや中国の、食べ物や言葉や文化などを教えてもらうことができました。箸の使い方や新しい言葉を学びました。そして一番重要なこと、自分とは全く違う文化を受け入れ、理解し、愛することを学びました。
今は私の人生の折り返し地点です。私は日本人女性と結婚していて、素晴らしい２人の子供がおります。日本語を学んでいて、年に１度は日本に旅行に行きます。今となっては、日本は私の第二のふるさとです。完全に日本にとけ込むことはできませんが、日本へ旅行に行くのは大好きです。日本は、とても清潔できちんとしていて、礼儀正しい国です。内向的な自分にとって天国のようなところです。
